HAT FACT...
This style of woollen knitted hat is known by many different names in different countries.
In Canada, it is a toque. Sometimes it is know as a beanie. There may be a ‘pompom’ on some and they may or may not have a folded brim. They can be tight fitting or looser. Ones with earflaps and tassels are known as sherpas.

Interview with Martha Quinn for MTV
Backstage, Wembley Stadium
At about 5' 50" of this interview, Bob Dylan talks about the 'basket houses' in Greenwich Village. Performers would pass a basket or hat through the audience to make their money. 'The bigger the hat, the more money you made'. He states that this is why he started wearing a hat.

HAT FACT...
Sporting the ‘cap under a hoodie’ look is now popular with many teens and as adult sport and leisure wear.
Hoodies really became popular in the 1970s because of hip-hop culture in New York. They provide a level of comfort and anonymity. They can be glamorous and designer, or plain street. In parts of the UK and around the world, they have been banned from some stores and banks due to their ability to conceal identity in the process of a crime.
The cap Bob Dylan is wearing here in 1989 looks less like a baseball cap and more like a ‘newsboy’ style or 'Gatsby'.
